It was the first time that the Salone del Mobile fair returned to its original location in Rho Fiera Milano since the beginning of the COVID pandemic. This year also marked the 60th anniversary of this hugely significant occasion for the furniture industry.

There is no doubt that the success of this year's Salone is due to the desire of the international design community to once again have the opportunity to meet, to exchange ideas and inspirations.

In this article, however, we will focus in particular on the colour trends identified at the Salone del Mobile 2022 and how to apply these trends in the most important area of the home, namely the living room. Let's get started!

Colour trend of Salone del Mobile 2022: the revenge of green

Among all the colours featured, there was clearly one winner: green, presented in various shades, with an emphasis on the more natural and soft tones.

Sage green, undergrowth green, forest green, olive green, fern green, moss green, hunter green: these are just a few of the various shades of green that characterised the furnishing accessories and design objects presented in the installations at the Salone.

The use of this colour was predominant not only in the most visible and impactful elements, such as walls, wallpapers and in general the coverings of accessories such as tables, cupboards, sofas and tea tables, but also in accessories, textiles and, of course, houseplants, other major protagonists of the new interior design concept presented at the Salone.

A throwback to the natural, even in colour palettes

In general, we can say that all references to the natural, organic and sustainable world played a prominent role at the Salone del Mobile. This was noticeable in the eco-friendly, organic and durable materials chosen to create and renovate many of the products presented, as well as in the increasingly softer and cosier shapes given to furnishing accessories, especially sofas, which are particularly full and voluminous.

And, of course, this trend was also strongly felt in the colour palettes used by designers and manufacturers: soft, natural, unshouted, unburdened shades that match each other perfectly and never get tired.

Therefore, in addition to the green we have already mentioned, colours such as creamy white, yellow ochre, orange, sugar paper, browns, violet and anthracite were widely used. The references to the world of the earth, the forest and the Mediterranean are very evident.

So, if you are planning to renovate or revise the décor of your home, go for the natural and organic shades we have just talked about.

Lets now find out how to apply the colour trend of the Salone del Mobile in our living area.

Using the colours of the Salone del Mobile 2022 in the living area

The living area is often experienced as the most important area of the home, because it is where most of the household and social activities take place, and it is here that one can express one's creativity to the fullest in terms of furnishing.

And it is also one of the rooms of the home on which the Salone del Mobile installations focus most. During this edition, modular and very voluminous sofas caught the eye in the context of the living area, as well as tea tables, plants, sideboards (often lacquered, enamelled or transparent), tables and islands: the last two elements used as a conceptual and stylistic 'bridge' between the living room and the kitchen area.

And the colours, how were they used? Undoubtedly the use of the all-natural, soft and unshouted palette mentioned above prevails.

In the sofas, often presented in soft fabrics such as bouclé, we find a prevalence of creamy white, as well as the aforementioned green and earth colours.

Very interesting, however, is the use of the palette in the lacquered and enamelled elements, such as sideboards or tea tables, where by virtue of the shiny material the colour stands out more and creates more accent: in these complements we find more striking shades, such as purple, yellows or lime.

Carpets, walls, bookcases and other accessories are either placed in harmony with the colours of the sofa or are tinged with more neutral, soft colours to emphasise the furnishing accessories where the tones are more pronounced and noticeable.

The advice, therefore, is not to overload the living space with too many colours, but to give chromatic importance to a few furnishings, such as the sofa, and use soft, neutral colours for everything else.
