As we slowly approach winter, there are so many changes we can see around us.

The days start getting shorter, it’s often dark when weg get home from work. Even the sky seems duller than usual, which makes us rather melancholic.

If we then add to these already unhappy elements the adverse weather typical of winter (cold, strong wind...) and the almost total absence of greenery in the nature around us, it‘s very easy to experience the so-called Winter Blues, that general feeling of sadness that characterises the cold months.

One of the best ways to keep away from the Winter Blues (also known as seasonal affective disorder) is to make some small changes in your home through simple decorating ideas.

To help you regain your cheerfulness in the middle of this cold season, we have written a list of decorating ideas that will get rid of the blues and make these months much more enjoyable!

Add some greenery or floral patterns to your décor

One of the greatest features of the winter season is the lack of greenery. Plants lose their leaves and all we are left to see are bare branches.

This emptiness in the usually lush plants can make us feel dejected, increasing the intensity of the Winter Blues. That is why we suggest you to decorate your rooms with green elements and floral patterns, so that your eyes can still see the beauty of the plants and flowers around you.

Some excellent objects to achieve this are blankets, sheets, pillows, pictures or curtains: focus on natural colours and cheerful or floral-themed patterns!

Surround yourself with softness

When the outside world seems harsh and cold, it‘s important to surround yourself with things that will give you the opposite feeling.

Snuggle up in cosy quilts and pillows that can keep you warm and chase away the blues. By surrounding yourself with soft and fluffy items, you can amplify the warmth of your body and your home, keeping you away from the harshness of the season.

So, go for decorative plaids, wool blankets for the sofa, duvets and warm pillows. Also, soft sofas or poufs are always welcome!

Use relaxing and positive colours

Colours have an immense effect on our psyche and there are many scientific studies on this subject.

The effect of the Winter Blues largely stems from the lack of colour around us, which is why we should look up colour theory and make quick solutions at home by being inspired by it.

You can buy sheets, quilts or other bedding in colours such as blue, white and soft purple if you are trying to create a calm atmosphere. On the other hand, colours such as yellow, orange and red promote a feeling of energy, cheerfulness and positivity, so it's always a good idea to include furniture items in these colours too.

This trick applies to textiles as well as objects and accessories: the important thing is to bring colour into the rooms of the house!

That way you can regain some liveliness, even when finding it outside becomes difficult.

Keep your feet warm

There is no worse feeling during the winter than a cold floor, especially when you just wake up.

When our feet come into contact with the intense cold of the floor, they suffer such a shock that we become grumpy and dissatisfied from the start of the day.

This is why we recommend enriching your home with runners and soft rugs: not only will your feet no longer suffer from the winter cold, but the entire atmosphere of the home will benefit, becoming warmer and cosier.

Use the hygge effect with accessories, candles and objects

Hygge is a Danish word that can be roughly translated as 'cosiness'.

Hygge is achieved by including objects and accessories in your home that generate feelings of warmth, cosiness and comfort, such as candles, soft blankets, plants, aggiunta, vases, figurines and perfumers.

In general, the advice is to make your home more cosy and comfortable by adding objects that are beautiful to look at, soothing and make you forget the cold of winter!

Go green

The simple addition of a houseplant can bring calm and serenity, as it can also reduce stress and fatigue.

Furthermore, the right indoor plants can also remove toxins, as they help to clean and purify the indoor air.
