The sofa is a furnishing accessory located in every house, an essential presence in every living room. No matter the style or size of the living room: the sofa will always come first when we have to choose how to furnish the room. Although the shape of the sofa has changed radically over the centuries, what does not change is its function and its ability to adapt to the needs of the present; since the desires of each one of us are very different, there are many different sofa shapes, so that it can best adapt to every context.

Let's discover them together!

LINEAR

The most popular and classic sofa is definitely the linear one. A shape that is always up-to-date, never out of fashion, comfortable and versatile for all types of living room. Usually these are two or three-seater structures, but there are also larger ones, like the one in the second picture. This is the most popular form because it can be adapted to all needs: it can be used alone or together with puffs and armchairs, for a more dynamic and personal result; it can be positioned against the wall or in the middle of the room, if it is a large open space; it can also be a sofa bed or container model, ideal as a space-saving solution. For those who like to go for a safe ride, the linear sofa is the perfect furnishing solution.

We have chosen to show you some models with different styles: the first picture shows the elegant Elisa sofa by Enzo Mari for Driade; the second and third picture shows the famous Ghost sofa by Gervasoni, designed by Paola Navone, available in the iconic white linen cover or in many coloured fabrics.

PENINSULA

The sofa with peninsula is a variant that has been in vogue for many years: it is similar to a linear sofa, but the right or left end element (by choice) is an extended seat, which allows you to lie down or simply stretch your legs while sitting down. The size of the peninsula might vary, there are long or short, wide or narrow peninsulas: the choice is simply dictated by aesthetic taste. However, current trends show that the choice is mainly for wide and short, almost square, peninsulas. This element gives the sofa additional comfort, and is in fact the second most popular sofa shape. It can be positioned with the peninsula against the wall to exploit the space, or in the centre of the living room to create a small corner divider.

In the gallery we propose two Driade sofas, Wow and Hall, and a MyHome Collection sofa, whose name is Softly. All three sofas are also available in a linear version.

DAYBED or DORMEUSE

A little bit sofa and a little bit bed: as the name suggests, the daybed is a day bed, a seat halfway between the bed and the sofa, characterized by a sophisticated informality. It generally measures 85/90 x 190/200 cm, like the dimensions of a single bed, and looks like a bench often without armrests and backrest. A similar model (often the two complements are not distinguishable) is the dormeuse, a daybed with sinuous shapes, often characterized by a backrest that descends softly to the seat. Whether it is called English or French style, both furnishing accessories seem to invite us to a relaxing nap. The simple and regular shape makes them very versatile, though more refined than the linear sofa. These are historical furnishing accessories, whose origins date back to Roman times, and which have attracted the attention of the most important designers in the sector. Definitely an original idea to give a touch of liveliness to the living room!

Below are three very different models: Ghost 20 by Gervasoni, often used as the end piece in the composition of a modular sofa; Mid by Kann, a dormeuse with a young and modern design; at last Leeon by Driade, designed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba, with an elegant and retro look.

CORNER

Perhaps it reminds a bit of the sofa with peninsula as a form, but as functionality and aesthetics these are two very different complements. The corner sofa is rather bulky, so it is more difficult to insert it in domestic environments with limited dimensions. On the other hand, it adapts well to large rooms because it takes up a lot of space both physically and visually. Some models have armrests at both ends, others only on one side, to make the most exposed part of the sofa more accessible and liveable. It is often placed against the wall, but in modern homes it is frequently placed in the centre of the living room: in combination with a small table and perhaps a large rug, it is easy to obtain a reserved corner dedicated only to the sofa, which with its "L" shape creates a perfect partition from the rest of the room. The corner sofa lends itself well to conviviality: it offers many seats and, thanks to its corner shape, people can comfortably look each other in the face. This shape is also ideal for large families.

The following photographs show the Ghost sofa by Gervasoni, in one of its many configurations, and the Mod sofa by Driade, also available as a linear sofa.

MODULAR

If none of the previous shapes seem to fit your living room, the sofa that best meets your needs is definitely the modular sofa. These sofas are made up of single elements (seat type, corner, side, end, chaise longue, puff, etc.) that can be built according to the customer's needs, combining different elements as desired. This form of sofa adapts well to all contexts: it can be placed in a small living room if you choose to combine only a few elements, while if you are looking for a personalized and unique result, the potential of the modular sofa allows you to give vent to your creativity 100%. By arranging the cushions in different positions, you can obtain different layouts for a sofa with an always new look.

And when it comes to the modular sofa, Gervasoni is definitely the master: the Ghost and More collections are perfect for creating a made-to-measure sofa! There are many individual elements with different characteristics to offer a wide range of customised solutions. Just look at the next pictures to see how many different results can be obtained!
